1 February 2025

Plant Hire Checklist

Before hiring any plant or equipment, work through this checklist to avoid costly mistakes and delays.

Before You Call

  • Know your requirements — What exactly do you need? What size? What attachments? How long for?
  • Check site access — Measure gates, doorways, and paths. Can the equipment physically get to where it needs to be?
  • Check ground conditions — Is the ground firm enough? Will tracked machines damage surfaces?
  • Check for services — Locate underground cables, pipes, and drains before any digging work.

Questions to Ask the Hire Company

  1. What's included in the price? — Fuel, insurance, PPE, delivery, breakdown cover?
  2. What's the insurance excess? — This can range from £250 to £2,000+. Consider your own plant hire insurance.
  3. What certifications do you need? — CPCS, CSCS, or other operator cards may be required.
  4. What happens if it breaks down? — Understand the process for breakdowns and response times.
  5. What's the minimum hire period? — Some companies charge for a minimum of 1 week.
  6. Are there any additional charges? — Late returns, damage waivers, fuel surcharges?
